This healthy breakfast strawberry banana smoothie is thick, flavourful and refreshing. What makes it the perfect breakfast smoothie is the perfectly balanced combo of healthy fats, carbs and protein that guarantee a great start to your day.
How to Make a Good Breakfast Smoothie
Smoothies are great any time of the day, sitting down or on the go, but this particular smoothie is perfect for breakfast. Here’s a quick breakdown of the ingredients:
- Banana
- Frozen strawberries
- Rolled oats
- Almond milk
- Nut butter
Why Bananas?
A banana makes the smoothie wonderfully creamy, and naturally sweetens it. It’s also a great source of potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, magnesium, and copper, as well as several types of potent antioxidants, such as dopamine and catechins.
Why Strawberries?
Strawberries are fresh, sweet and delicious, and one of the healthiest berries. They’re packed with vitamins and minerals, low-calorie, rich in fibre and a great source of antioxidants.
You can use different berries if you don't have any strawberries at hand, but if you do, I strongly recommend sticking to strawberries.
Why Oats?
Adding ⅓ cup of rolled oats to this strawberry banana smoothie gives it a richer texture, and makes the smoothie much more filling. Oats are also rich in antioxidants and fibre, and packed with manganese, phosphorus and magnesium.
Why Almond Milk?
Every smoothie needs a liquid component, and I'm a huge fan of almond milk. It’s vegan, low-calorie, and doesn’t alter the flavour of the smoothie too much. You can substitute it with any other milk if you prefer.
Why Nut butter?
Adding a tablespoon of nut butter adds creaminess, flavour, and a healthy dose of fat to the smoothie. Peanut butter is great, but you can substitute it with any other nut butter that suits your needs.
Can I Substitute Any of the Ingredients?
Smoothies are the perfect food to play around with, but if you want a similar flavour and consistency that I got, I suggest making only a few minor tweaks:
- To save calories: omit nut butter, use skim almond milk or even replace it with water.
- For a creamier texture and fuller flavour: use full-fat milk or an extra teaspoon of nut butter.
- To make it thicker and more refreshing: add 2-3 ice cubes or use frozen banana.
How Many Calories Are in This Strawberry Banana Smoothie?
One serving of this strawberry banana smoothie with almond milk has approximately 200 calories.
