This vegan apple and pear crumble is the perfect autumn dessert. The classic fruit combo is reminiscent of a sweet apple pie, with a crumbly topping for that much-needed carb fix we all crave for once the temperatures start to drop.
There are hundreds of ways to make the best crumble, with recipes calling for blueberries, blackberries, rhubarb, peach, plum, and, of course, apples. Knee deep in autumn baking, I just knew I had to include apples and pears for that perfect cold weather fruit match.
How to Make This Apple and Pear Crumble
Much like a crisp, a crumble is insanely easy to make.
- For the filling: you will only need 4 ingredients to make a thick, bubbly filling - apples and pears as the stars of this dessert, dark brown sugar to sweeten and a bit of coconut oil for a fuller flavour.
- For the topping: the classic crumble topping calls for no more than three basic ingredients - flour, butter and sugar. It bakes nice and crispy, and perfectly balances the sweet fruity filling.
What Kind of Apples Should I Use?
I used Bramley apples for their tart flavour that complements the sweetness of pears. Stick to tart varieties, such as Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, or Honey Crisp.
More Tips on Making Apple and Pear Crumble
- A crumble doesn’t need to be refrigerated. Just cover it with foil and leave it at room temperature for up to three days.
- Make single-serving portions in ramekins, like I did with these mini apple crisps. This apple crumble recipe makes about six mini servings.
- Don’t bother peeling the apples. The filling is cooked before it’s baked, so the peels are cooked all the way through and super soft. Plus, this way you get some extra fibre and vitamins that would otherwise go to waste.
Variations of Apple and Pear Crumble
Replace coconut oil with butter in the crumble topping for a non-vegan version. Both work equally well, though using oil gives it a slightly crumblier texture.
