๐ Why You Will Love This Recipe
This 3-ingredient vegan banana smoothie is perfect as a healthy sweet treat on its own and a great base recipe for adding more ingredients. I simply love it, and hereโs why:
- Quick and easy โ It takes less than five minutes to make and three ingredients. Itโs also perfect for using up old bananas.
- Super versatile โ You can add more fruits, such as berries, mango or pineapple, add a scoop of protein powder or a teaspoon of cocoa for a chocolate version.
- Creamy and delicious โ Makes a great sweet snack or breakfast.
- Kid-friendly โ Itโs the perfect sweet but healthy treat.
๐ Ingredients
- Banana โย For the best flavour use a ripe banana. You can either use a fresh banana, or frozen banana slices (you can find a short guide on how to freeze bananas below).
- Milk โย Use your favourite dairy or non-dairy milk. I like to use almond milk in smoothies because of its neutral flavour.
- Yogurt โ Makes the smoothie creamier. You can use dairy or non-dairy yogurt, such as soy, coconut or oat.
- Agave syrup or honey (optional) โย Adding liquid sweetener is optional, but highly recommended. I added a tablespoon of agave syrup.
๐ Variations
One of the best things about this smoothie is that it serves as the perfect base for any other flavour you want to throw in there. Here are just a few suggestions:
- Fruitier โ mango, pineapple, blueberries or strawberries work really well.
- Higher in protein โ add a scoop of unflavoured or vanilla protein powder.
- High-fibre โ add hemp seeds or chia seeds.
- Thicker โ swap milk for more yogurt.
- Creamier โ a tablespoon of nut butter. My favourite is almond butter.
- Ice cold โ add a handful of ice or use frozen bananas.
How to Freeze Bananas
If you have overripe bananas and are unsure how to use them, freezing is an excellent solution. This not only helps to reduce waste, but also ensures you have bananas readily available whenever you wish to prepare a smoothie. The process is easy, but the trick is making sure the slices donโt stick together. Hereโs the best way to freeze bananas so they stay smoothie-ready.
- Step 1: Peel and slice the banana into desired size. If you have a high-speed blender, you can leave pretty big chunks and they will still blend with ease. A regular blender might struggle with larger pieces, so in that case, cut the bananas into thinner slices.
- Step 2: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the slices on the sheet in a single layer. This will prevent them from sticking together as they freeze. Itโs enough to let them freeze just a bit, leaving them in the freezer for half an hour to an hour.
- Step 3: Remove the banana slices from the sheet and transfer them to a freezer-friendly lidded container. You can keep them in the freezer for three to four months, and use them in smaller portions whenever needed.
