Made with five ingredients, in only four simple steps, these easy baked apples with walnuts are the ultimate dessert for when you don’t really feel like baking. Core the apples, stuff them with chopped walnut and maple syrup filling, and bake until sweet caramel sauce starts to spill out.
These baked apples are inspired by tufahije, walnut-stuffed apples stewed in sugar water. But they’re healthier (no insane amounts of syrupy sauce), and much, much easier to make. My chief taste tester also likes to compare them to my baked pears with walnuts.
These baked apples are:
- Quick and easy to make
- Healthy
- Vegan
- Gluten free
- Free from refined sugar
- Delicious
- Downright beautiful
How to Make Baked Apples with Walnuts
- Core the apples. If you’ve never done it before, coring a whole apple may seem a bit daunting. Trust me, it’s really not. Here's a quick guide on how to core an apple.
- Prepare the filling by combining maple syrup, chopped walnuts, cinnamon and vanilla.
- Stuff the cored apples with walnut filling. If you’re using large apples, there should be just enough filling for four apples. If you're left with a bit of extra filling, spoon it on top of the apples. This creates a nice crusty finish, even if it spills over.
- Bake at 350°F for 20 minutes. If you want the apples to be a bit softer, bake for another 10 minutes or so. Best served warm.
A Few Extra Tips and Tricks
- This is a recipe you can easily make ahead. Assemble the apples beforehand, and pop them in the oven right before you’re ready to serve.
- Serve with extra maple syrup and chopped walnuts, and sprinkle with a dash of cinnamon.
- It’s easy to adjust this recipe for only one or two people. Simply halve the filling ingredients and use two apples instead of four.
Variations of Baked Apples
- Maple syrup adds richness to the flavour, but you can easily substitute it with honey if you prefer.
- I used Gala apples, which are mild and sweet. You can try other varieties as well, but I recommend sticking to red apples.
- You can easily sub walnuts with pecans.

Easy Baked Apples with Walnuts
Made with five ingredients, in only four simple steps, these easy baked apples with walnuts are the ultimate dessert for when you don’t really feel like baking. Core the apples, stuff them with chopped walnut and maple syrup filling, and bake until sweet caramel sauce starts to spill out.
ingredients
- 4 large apples
- ¼ cup maple syrup
- ½ cup chopped walnuts
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F/175°C.
- In a medium bowl, mix together maple syrup, chopped walnuts, vanilla and cinnamon. Let the filling sit while you core the apples.
- Core four whole apples, leaving the bottoms untouched. This will prevent the filling from spilling out.
- Place apples in a baking dish, and stuff them evenly with the prepared walnut filling.
- Bake for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes of baking, the apples will be soft, but still slightly crunchy in the middle. If you want them perfectly tender, bake for another 10 minutes or so.
- Serve warm, with chopped walnuts, drizzled with maple syrup or honey, and with a dash of cinnamon.
