Ingredients You’ll Need to Make Strawberry Overnight Oats
These strawberry overnight oats don’t call for any whacky ingredients. All you’ll need is:
Old-fashioned rolled oats - don’t substitute these for quick oats. The texture just won’t be the same.
Milk - I used unsweetened almond milk, but other types of milk work just as well, such as soy, oat, coconut, rice, hemp or cashew milk.
Chia seeds - they thicken the oats and give them a perfectly creamy texture. Plus, they’re packed with fibre and healthy omega-3 fats.
Sweetener - use any sweetener you like, such as agave, maple syrup or a low-carb liquid sweetener like stevia. Leave it out completely to make these overnight oats sugar free.
Vanilla extract - for a sweet hint of vanilla.
Yogurt - I used Greek soy yogurt, which makes the texture so much creamier. Any vegan yogurt will work.
Fresh strawberries - cut, sliced or quartered, depending on how big you want the chunks to be. You can also use more or less strawberries, depending on your personal preferences.
How to Make Strawberry Overnight Oats
Step One - Base Layer
Combine rolled oats, milk, chia seeds, sweetener of choice, and vanilla extract. Scoop the mixture into a bowl, mason jar or a resealable container.
Step Two - Yogurt Layer
In a small bowl, combine yogurt and fresh strawberries. Layer this mixture over the oats.
Step Three - Oats Layer
Sprinkle with an extra tablespoon of dry rolled oats.
Step Four - Leave Overnight
Seal up the container and let it sit in the fridge overnight.
Step Five - Top with Fresh Strawberries
The next morning, stir everything together, or enjoy eating it in layers. Alternatively, you can just mix all the ingredients together, and just add everything into the jar or container all at once.
Strawberry Overnight Oats FAQs
Are overnight oats really healthy?
Overnight oats have only two basic ingredients: rolled oats and milk. They’re homemade, which means you can easily control what ingredients you’re using, and always opt for real food. In my book, this makes overnight oatmeal a healthier breakfast than most. Overnight oats are:
- High in fibre
- Low in fat
- Low in calories
- Gluten free
- Easily vegan
Do you eat overnight oats hot or cold?
While some overnight oats can be reheated in the microwave or on the stovetop, these strawberry oats are made with yogurt, which I wouldn’t recommend eating warm.
Which oats should I use?
While overnight oats can technically be made with rolled, quick or even steel cut oats, I would always recommend using rolled oats, which is also what this recipe calls for. Rolled oats, also known as regular or old-fashioned oats, are made when oat groats are steamed and then rolled into flakes. They are what you will most often find in oatmeal and overnight oatmeal recipes, cookies and other baked goods.
I actually answered all these questions and more in greater detail in this guide on how to make overnight oats.
Are these overnight oats vegan?
Use non-dairy Greek yogurt and non-dairy milk to make these overnight oats vegan. I used soy yogurt and unsweetened almond milk.
Are these overnight oats gluten free?
Yes, as long as you use certified gluten-free oats.
Can I make these sugar free?
Yes, simply omit agave syrup or replace it with a sweetener such as stevia.
